About the event

BookBar is thrilled to welcome Yáng Shuāng-zǐ , the acclaimed International Booker Prize-shortlisted author of Taiwan Travelogue, a playful novel that is both a gripping romance and an incisive look at postcolonial history. Her first book translated to English, she'll be joined in conversation with the book's English translator, Lin King.

In 1938, a young journalist arrives in Taiwan from Japan on invitation from the Japanese government ruling the island. She has little interest in their agenda, and instead longs to experience the real Taiwan and to taste its most authentic cuisine. With the help of a much younger Taiwanese woman, tasked as her translator, this dream comes true. Together the women travel across the island, eating and growing closer; yet there is something that keeps the translator at a distance, something that the journalist will uncover.
